魏大爷（田烈 饰）带着女儿秀兰（郭艺文 饰）从关内逃难到东北，来到了一家煤矿厂做工人。在这里，秀兰结识了名叫小王的男子，两人决定携手步入婚姻的殿堂。哪知道就在他们的新婚之日，矿上发生了矿难，小王不幸遇难，这令秀兰悲痛欲绝。 一段时间过去了，秀兰重振旗鼓，和矿工何正刚走到了一起，两人度过了一段快乐的日子，还有了爱情的结晶何淑芳（郭琦 饰）。然而，不幸再度降临到了秀兰的头上，在一场瓦斯大爆炸中，何正刚不幸死去了，秀兰再度成为寡妇。在秀兰最灰暗的时刻里，煤矿工人鲁万春（郭振清 饰）一直默默无声的在秀兰背后帮助着她，支持着她。
