李春生于1838/1/12出生于福建厦门，母林有，父亲李德声是一个在溪边为人摆渡的人，家境穷苦。他13岁时便和一些孩子在街上叫卖糖果以帮家计，中午时和姐姐送饭去溪边给父亲吃。14岁时巧遇一个来渡船的英商Elles，看上这位聪明但个子不高的少年，起先拟僱他为打杂的工作。可能是这位英商的关係，15岁时他和父亲一起在厦门长老会受洗成为基督徒。 他聪明、勤快、又诚实负责，20 岁时便成英商怡记洋行（Elles & Co.）的重要雇员，掌柜的（经理之意）。和Elles 在一起不久便学会英文，1857年，在他20 岁时，曾到香港去进修英文。因为经商也要和官员及知识份子来往，所以自修中文，特别是文言文。不久在厦门因为抢匪多，外国商埠常遭强劫，而不能营业。Elles 逐将李春生介绍给苏格兰商人约翰杜特（John Dodd），在他所设的宝顺洋行任职。1866 年也是他...
