《东方欲晓》以1948年春，毛泽东率中央机关从陕北出发，途经山西临县、兴县、岢岚、五寨、神池、宁武、代县、繁峙，翻越五台山前往河北西柏坡的一段革命历史为素材，全方位呈述了毛泽东在山西19天里，和周恩来、任弼时一起深入基层、深入群众，围绕土地改革、党风建设进行了详细调研，对保护民族工商业和发展农业生产做出了一系列重要指示。
