北宋年间，宋辽大战，杨宗保随父亲杨延昭率领大军反击辽军收复失地，不料辽国萧太后命巫师摆起天门阵，致使宋军死伤惨重，杨宗保奉命前往穆柯寨求取降龙木，遇上穆羽摆下比武招亲擂台，杨宗保和穆桂英“一战倾心”，穆桂英将降龙木交于杨宗保助他破阵，不料杨宗保看护不当，降龙木在其营中被贼人烧毁，杨延昭欲将杨宗保军法处置，关键时刻穆桂英闯入法场救下杨宗保，并亲自率领宋军破解天门阵，大胜辽军。
