1911年，清政府将已由民办的川汉铁路收归“国有”，并侵吞了已筹集的巨额铁路股银，又将筑路权出卖给英帝国主义等四国。为此，四川人民奋起反抗，股东代表在成都成立了保路同志会，掀起了轰轰烈烈的保路运动，罢课、罢市、抗捐、抗粮，清政府下令残酷镇压，四川总督赵尔丰大肆屠杀，更加激起了四川人民的无比愤怒。在革命党人的推动下，保路运动进一步推向高潮，各地纷纷发起武装起义，成为武昌起义的前奏。剧中塑造了余怀力父子为代表的两代知识分子为建路保路前赴后继，英勇斗争的生动形象。全剧还贯穿了余怀力与四川铁路反动头目何老太爷之孙女何洁的生死爱情故事：兼有东西方美的少女何洁，随父母从美国回来。一次，何洁与清华学堂高材生、川汉铁路勘测队的余怀力邂逅相遇，产生了爱情，而何洁的祖父却执意要将何洁嫁给自家表亲的晚辈赵季昌。何洁得知后毅然许身余怀力，种下了爱情的种子。在封建礼教的高...
