故事发生在亚圣孟子的故乡—山东省。孟子第68代孙孟乐川对苦读诗书、考取功名兴趣淡漠，在母亲的支持下，创办了瑞蚨祥绸缎庄。他的表弟高显阳也弃学从商，追随日本商人太野一郎最终成为孟乐川的对手。 瑞蚨祥受到地方官僚和洋商买办的几重压迫，他不得不寻求靠山，忍痛割爱将冬梅姑娘献给袁世凯。因捐资治黄，他赢得了御赐“乐善好施”的青石牌坊，但却无法在祖先的圣地孟林为父亲和自己买下一掌坟地。 高显阳一心想挤垮瑞蚨祥。八国联军攻进北京，瑞蚨祥化为灰烬，孟乐川在绝望中求助赛金花，北京瑞蚨祥东山再起，不料母亲又遭土匪绑票……故事真实地展示了民族商业在19世纪后期中国的尴尬困境。
