故事叙述明太祖朱元璋建国之初，杀功臣、除明教，将协助自己取得天下的伙伴一一诛灭。为保江山，免除武林中人叛变，他更收尽天下秘籍，编成一部绝世武学奇书，连同一对龙凤宝剑，藏于深宫中，自此武林各大门派乃一蹶不振。 明孝宗及位，因钟情一民女，佞臣为取皇帝欢心，竟擅自作主，强抢民女入宫，并杀其爱人；虽然孝宗对其宠爱有加，封其为后，但太后其实怀恨在心，誓言推翻朱姓王朝。 孝宗在病危时，终识破太后野心，于是将秘籍陪葬，并杀工匠以灭口。 正德皇帝长大成人，太后欲以亲信曹公公之女曹文珠许配皇上，但正德与珠毫无感情且话不投机，只好负气微服下江南散心。 正德后投宿龙凤酒店，觉女侍凤姐与女侠身形相投，多多次求证皆无所获，但两人已建立良好印象，感情渐生。 此时，武林各大门派均聚集龙凤酒店，欲取再现江胡之武功秘籍，正德卷入其中。西域明教余众，图谋推翻明朝，于是派教主女儿柏木儿来到中原。在夺取秘籍的过程中，儿渐爱上正德，但儿夺取秘籍的手段太过卑鄙，为正德所不齿。 而正德与凤的感情正逐渐发展，但被凤之养母所阻，原因是凤一家惨死正与太后有关。凤不得已只好斩断情丝。正德黯然离开江南。 正德返宫后，珠对其体贴入微，正德渐愧只好答应婚事，大婚在即，正德却心系凤，因而郁郁寡欢。 后凤进宫救人，事迹败露，太后将计就计，将凤许配正德，凤立为妃被迫留在宫中。 凤在宫中发现太后阴谋，并发觉太后夜练白骨爪功，凤正欲告之正德，被太后识破二人齐被太后追杀。后太后制住凤，威胁正德江山、美人只能取其一。正德犹豫之际，凤却刎颈自尽，正德伤痛欲绝，虽拼命抢救，凤却香消玉殒，死于正德怀中
