蒋天涯和夏志刚读大学时是最好的朋友。蒋天涯出生知识分子家庭，叛逆而自我，是大学校园里著名的“玩家”。夏志刚家在农村，发愤读书十余年，终于考上了大学！毕业后的三年,天涯不断跳槽，没有固定的目标，感情生活上一直奉行单身主义的他却因种种原因和自己的女友文静闪电结婚。而夏志刚则成为一名公务员，并娶了城里长大的娇娇女于小曼。而生活却不近人意，天涯和夏志刚不仅婚姻不顺利，事业上也连连翻车，他们先后辞职，做起了生意，但好景不长很快就赔光了。天涯苦闷不堪，到西部乡村支教，不料却在乡村小学一群纯朴的孩童中间找到了自己的存在。而夏志刚开始不择手段地挣钱，导致父亲意外遭车祸身亡，后悔不已的夏志刚开始对自己的反省。经历了一番洗礼，两人重新找到了生命的价值，他们开了一家公司，几人朝着自己的梦想不断奋斗。
