夏明翰年轻时领导的革命团体“沙子会”在当地很有影响。面对吴佩孚的招安，他不屑一顾；在查禁日货的斗争中，他大义灭亲。这些举动引来富绅们的强烈不满。夏明翰的爷爷为保他安全，将他深锁阁楼。夏明翰趁夜破窗逃走，从此与家庭决裂。到长沙后，夏明翰经毛泽东介绍加入共产党。在领导人力车工人罢工时，交通员郑家钧为掩护他，右臂中弹受伤。两人在接触中日久生情，经毛泽东提议，结为夫妇。1928年，夏明翰被党调至湖北工作。此时，白色恐怖愈演愈烈，国民党几次抓捕夏明翰未果。夏明翰与中央派来的李维汉商议决定取消暴动计划，却在准备转移时不幸被内奸出卖。英勇就义前，夏明翰留下了爱国诗：“砍头不要紧，只要主义真。杀了夏明翰，还有后来人”。
