影片讲述发生在三十年代有关沙河镇跟万家庄两代人的爱恨情仇。 万家庄跟沙河镇的村民同饮青河水，却因为争水源而闹得民至老死，不相往来。沙河镇文武双全的赵时俊（赵文卓饰）本来跟温柔美丽的沈心慈（蒋勤勤饰）是郎才女貌的天作之合。但是却为了解决世代相争的水源问题，赵时俊毅然娶了万家庄庄主的女儿万秋玲（王艳饰），万秋玲孱弱多病，明知赵时俊心系沈姑娘，却还是包容了一切。这场本来就是错误的婚姻，非但没有换来两个镇子的和解，反而在恶势力的不断挑拨跟破坏下，酿出了更大的悲剧。当性格隐忍的沈心慈，为赵时俊生下女儿秀云（蒋勤勤饰）后，悲剧上演了……
