故事发生在明朝年间，皇后深得皇帝宠爱，且诞下龙嗣，太师庞飞（黄达亮 饰）害怕身为贵妃的妹妹因此失宠，设了一出狸猫换太子之计，害得皇后被打入冷宫，太子亦不知去向。一晃眼数十年过去，在一场科举考试之中，柳景（何贵林 饰）的养子柳生（吕颂贤 饰）本夺得了状元之位，却被庞飞的养子元旦（何宝生 饰）取而代之，柳生心中很是愤愤不平。 之后，柳生偶遇了妙龄少女段玉（蒋勤勤 饰），两人在阴差阳错之下结缘，彼此情愫渐生。之后，段玉之父因护送夜明珠一事遭人先喊身陷囹圄，于是段玉女扮男装混入了衙门，希望能够查明事件的真相。在衙门里，段玉和当差的柳生重逢了，然而柳生却并没有认出眼前英姿勃发的青年正是自己的爱人。
