进入二十世纪八十年代后，在国营食堂当厨师的大龄青年刘洪昌（黄志忠 饰），爱上因家庭负担重而上不起大学的文惠（左小青 饰），文惠姐弟多且又一个失明的母亲（岳红 饰）。洪昌的母亲（宋春丽 饰）与大哥（鲍大志 饰）一上来就反对这门亲事，但洪昌和文惠毅然顶着压力结婚了。文惠的妹妹文远（童瑶 饰）与弟弟文涛怎么也瞧不上这个姐夫，生活中摩擦不断。过了不久，文涛因与姐夫赌气离家出走，文远则被街头混混大黄猫糟踏，得知消息的文涛杀死了大黄猫，而闻讯赶来阻止的、已怀孕的文惠被弟弟失手推倒，最后死在了医院里，双重的打击一下击垮了刘洪昌......
