1948年，双胞胎兄弟刘金虎、刘金鹏先后离开家乡从福建鼓浪屿迁移到台湾，投靠运输大亨白海生，展开了一段爱恨情仇的故事。个性莽撞的哥哥刘金虎娶了白海生的女儿白玉凤，并将全部的生命奉献在商场上，最后还是走上绝路；温文儒雅的弟弟刘金鹏不忍哥哥花了毕生心血抢拼来的事业前功尽弃，而愿意扮演哥哥金虎身份过一生。在事业上金鹏继续从事海上运输事业，立志实现两岸通航；但在感情上金鹏却不知如何面对自己的嫂嫂玉凤及侄子明郎。二十年后，金鹏将明朗扶养成人，明朗天性聪明可也养成了公子哥习气，并爱上了金虎的死对头周勇的女儿素卿。明朗在白建雄（白玉凤的哥哥）的挑拨下，和金鹏反目离家出走。最终，他秉持永不放弃的「阿郎」精神，解开了上一代的恩怨，也帮助金鹏一起实现了通航的愿望。
