玄武门之变后，登基的李世民（唐国强 饰）开始贞观之治，他任人为贤、知人善用，造就了一批卓越的政治英才。但人非圣贤，由于疏于对儿女的管教，太子承乾、魏王泰骄奢淫逸，晋王则勾搭宠妃武媚娘（秦岚 饰），致使长孙皇后（赵倩 饰）带着失望愤然离世。吴王恪（潘耀武 饰）虽得李世民恩宠，却因其母是隋炀帝女儿遭众大臣诛伐。高阳公主（沈傲君 饰）从小受父皇钟爱，伹到了谈婚论嫁年龄却爱上远离权力中心的吴王恪和浄土寺的辩机和尚，令父皇有苦难言，最终，她被许配给了丞相房玄龄做了儿媳。面对父皇把自己当做权力交易的筹码，高阳公主深恶痛绝、心如死灰。最终，她冲破封建礼教束缚，投向了心仪的辩机怀抱......
