阿洪（莫少聪 饰）和女友阿梅（罗美薇 饰）相恋多年，两人之间感情十分要好。阿梅是含着金汤匙出生的千金小姐，在家中备受宠爱，因此，她和一穷二白的阿洪之间的恋情遭到了阿梅父亲的强烈反对。为了拆散这对爱侣，阿梅的父亲将阿梅带到美国定居，可是阿梅离开之时，她的腹中已经怀上了阿洪的骨肉。 阿梅选择将孩子生在了美国，取名山姆，独自将他抚养长大。有一天，阿梅突然从美国返回香港，回到了阿洪的身边。原来，阿梅患上了不治之症，命不久矣，她希望在自己死之前看到父子两人团聚的场面。然而，当山姆得知阿洪就是自己的父亲时，却表现出了抗拒。
