故事发生在民国初年，潘家世代经营着永泰隆丝绸厂，在当地家大业大，根基稳固。潘家显（麦长青 饰）虽然身为长子，却因为能力不足个性软弱而无法承担家业，反而是妹妹潘巧儿（康华 饰）巾帼不让须眉，肩负着沉重的责任，将一切打理的井井有条。三子潘家扬（马浚伟 饰）深受父亲的喜爱，却一心沉迷于研究医学，早已离家。 冼碧云（邵美琪 饰）是潘巧儿手下的女工，亦和潘家显有着一段尘封的感情。只是最后，懦弱的潘家显选择顺从父母之命，迎娶了富家小姐杨艳桃（叶翠翠 饰）。某日，久无音信的潘家扬忽然现身，推动了潘家命运的齿轮，就在大家沉浸在潘家扬回归的喜悦之中时，等待着众人的却是潘巧儿冰冷的尸体。
