本片取材于阜新蒙民大队的英雄事迹。1946年3月，在中国共产党领导下，由蒙古族进步青年组成的蒙民大队在阜新成立。这支民族革命武装从无到有、从小到大，最后成为我军一支骑兵劲旅，为解放东北作出了贡献，在解放战争史上写下了光辉一页。从辽西丘陵到松辽平原，从塞北沙漠到巴林草原，无不留下阜新蒙民大队战斗过的足迹。
