As he reaches middle age, Naperas (Marcello Mastroianni) begins to realize the helplessness of life and the impermanence of fate. One day, on a train, Naperas met a beautiful woman. He was deeply fascinated by the woman's beauty. The woman seemed to be quite fond of Naperas. When the two were in love, the woman suddenly got off the stopped train, and Naperas followed her in surprise. Following the woman's footsteps, Naperas came to a large hotel. When he walked into the hotel, what appeared in front of Naperas was a veritable "Women's City". In this city of women, Naperas experienced a strange journey full of pain.
