The aristocratic boy Rafael met the young and beautiful girl Galena at a carnival. The two fell in love at first sight and had a secret tryst. Their affair was discovered by their family, and Rafael was kicked out of the house by his father. A few years later, Rafael joined the secret organization under the introduction of his brother's friend and met his former lover Galena, who was married to the leader of the secret organization. Despite this, she still loved Rafael deeply. One night, the two were caught by robbers. Galena jumped into the abyss to save herself. After being rescued, Rafal was mistaken for a robber. After being imprisoned for a long time, he was released and lost confidence in life. Later, Rafal picked himself up with the help of his friends and joined the Polish Legion. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the famous Polish critical realist writer Stefan Zeromski and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Wajda's interest in this subject is very obvious: he is trying to trace the formation process of Polish national consciousness. The film aroused enthusiastic comments from the Polish intelligentsia.
