Royal Romance

This film is adapted from the most legendary court love story in Danish history. The film won the Best Screenplay Award and the Best Actor Award at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival. Physician Joanna Federik Sterns (Mads Mikkelsen) is photographed by King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel F?lsgaard) and asked to accompany him on a trip to Europe. As the king's personal physician, Stearns completely swayed the mentally unstable king, gained his trust, and won the favor of Queen Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander). The queen soon fell in love with this handsome doctor. Their love affair even became a "national incident" for a time. With the support of the queen, Stearns became the de facto regent, and his reforms aroused the hatred of the nobles. He attempted a coup, but was eventually executed for "abuse of power" and "violation of the king's dignity."
