My Only One (Plot Commentary)

This film is adapted from the personal experience of American actor George Hamilton. In 1953, Dan Devereux (Kevin Bacon), the husband of Ann Devereux (played by Renée Zellweger), became an instant hit after writing the song "My Only One". After that, he was caught and raped in bed. Ann left New York in anger and took her sons Robbie (Mark Rendall) and George (Logan Lerman) with her, traveling to Boston, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and finally Los Angeles, California. Ann kept meeting old friends along the way, hoping to find a suitable partner and provide a bright future for herself and her children, until her savings ran out and she was stretched thin. Along the way, George thought that his mother would eventually bow to his father and return to New York due to financial problems, until he finally understood his mother's determination and unexpectedly discovered his acting talent. The film won the Berlin International Film Festival's Special Humanitarian Award and was nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Film.
