In 1937, the Japanese invasion of China broke out, and thousands of miles of mountains and rivers were devastated. Under the ravages of the Japanese invaders, Nanjing, the then capital, could not escape the fate of falling. Wei Duanben (played by Shao Feng), a small civil servant in the Nanjing government, was forced to abandon his first wife Wang Yulan and evacuate to Chongqing, the capital of the country, with the crowd of refugees.
