After her husband's death, Laura (Judi Dench) has been depressed. Friends around her have advised her to find something she is interested in to distract her attention. Unexpectedly, the interesting thing for Laura is to buy a closed theater. Laura, who knows nothing about running a theater, brings in professional Van Damme (Bob Hoskins). The two old men's tough personalities lead to many quarrels but also bring a glimmer of vitality to their lives. Laura named the theater Windermere Theatre, and their operation was a huge success. But good luck doesn't always follow her, and competitors soon followed Laura's lead, and business at the Windermere Theater plummeted. In order to save the situation, Laura made a bold decision - to perform a striptease in the theater.
