In Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, Nagai Daisuke (played by Matsuda Yusaku), who graduated from Tokyo Imperial University, came from a wealthy family and never worried about money. He travels around and has fun all day long, living a leisurely and comfortable life as a high-class vagrant. In contrast, Hiraoka Tsunejiro (played by Kaoru Kobayashi), a friend who has been with Nagai for many years, lives in poverty. His wife Michiyo (played by Miwako Fujitani) suffered from a heart disease during pregnancy, and her unborn child died prematurely. Ping Gang, who was under tremendous pressure, broke out and wandered around the fireworks venue. While livelihoods are becoming increasingly tight, the relationship between husband and wife exists in name only. Michiyo is the sister of Nagai and Hiraoka's late friend Suganuma (played by Toyo Kazama) during their college days. After all these years, Nagai, who has never been married, still has a deep admiration for Michiyo. He sympathizes with the other person's situation, but due to the constraints of morality, he can only keep the burning emotions deep in his heart. Deep love has no destiny, how can hundreds of heart knots be put aside... This film is adapted from Natsume Soseki's original work of the same name.
