This film is adapted from the novel by Chilean writer José Donoso. It has won 39 international awards and is the most extraordinary film in Chilean history. The story told takes place in a dilapidated mansion. The fifty-eight-year-old Don Anders is a single and declining aristocrat. He has been studying all his life but has no energy in life. He is decadent and depressed. Estila, a seventeen-year-old country girl, is hired to take care of her old and grumpy grandmother. Gradually, Don Anders develops an irresistible love for her. When Estila gets acquainted with a working-class boy, an extinct volcano finally erupts, drowning everything. Describing psychological contradictions and extraordinary emotional fluctuations from decadence and collapse has always been the characteristic of Chilean contemporary literary master José Donoso. Caoji, who was promoted from a photography director to a director, once again adapted Tang Laosu's novel after his previous work "The Moon in the Mirror". The rich and subtle details and characters of the original work are accurately grasped, and he won the best director award at the 2000 film festivals in Chile, Montreal and Italy.
