Cries and Whispers

Although Agnes (Harriet Andersson), Maria (Liv Ullmann) and Karin (Ingrid Thulin) are three sisters, they each have deep-rooted estrangement and alienation in their hearts. Agnes is suffering from a terminal illness and is about to die. The person who protects her is the maid Anna. Agnes never received the complete love from her mother. Before her death, she tried to make the sisters who had a tense relationship cherish each other, but it repeatedly backfired. Maria was the most favored child by her mother, and was therefore jealous of her sisters. Her love life was in a mess, wandering between her husband and her lover. The more she possesses love, the more greedy she becomes. Karin's life is even more depressing. The relationship with her husband reached a deadlock, causing her to indulge in self-abuse. The desire for reconciliation is too far away. They want to get rid of the shadow of life and get closer to each other's hearts again, but they find that the gap seems unbreakable.
