The Virgin Spring

In the morning, the devout farmer Tao Er (Max von Sydow) and his wife prayed, and then arranged for their daughter Karin to ride a horse to deliver some candles to the church. Karin put on a new dress and invited her adopted daughter Ingrid to accompany her. Pregnant Ingrid has a indulgent personality and has always been jealous of Karin's bright life. Before traveling, Ingrid stuffed a toad into her food. Arriving in front of a forest, Ingrid asked Karin to go on the road alone while she followed and observed. The three shepherds in the forest became vicious when they saw Karin alone. After raping her, they beat her to death and took away her coat. In the evening, three shepherds stayed at Tao'er's house and sold Karin's clothes to Tao's wife. A panicked Ingrid also returned home at the same time. She confessed to Tao'er that she had cursed Karin. After taking a bath and changing clothes, Tao Er beat himself with a birch branch and decided to use his hands to avenge his daughter... The film won the 1961 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1960 Cannes Film Festival Special Recommendation Award.
