In the 1980s, mainland China ushered in the third birth peak, and many couples responded to the family planning policy and only had one child. The middle-aged Beijing photojournalist Cao Depei (Li Xuejian) and his beautiful young wife Duan Jinghua (Song Dandan) are representatives.
