Terrestrial Ambition

In 19th-century Ireland, the handsome and muscular young tenant farmer Joseph Donely (played by Tom Cruise) suffered the death of his father. In order to avenge his father, this reckless young man is determined to kill the landlord Daniel Christie (Robert Prosky). By mistake, he failed, but because of this he met the landlord's beautiful daughter Xia Lian (Nicole Kidman). Different from her conservative parents, Xia Lian, who is flamboyant but delicate and simple, wants to leave her hometown and make a career outside. By chance, Xia Lian and Joseph escaped together and boarded a ship bound for the United States. But their journey was full of misfortunes from the beginning. Xia Lian's belongings were cheated or robbed, leaving her pockets empty. The two temporarily lived in a shabby apartment managed by Boston tycoon Kelly. The arrogant Xia Lian put down her body and worked in a factory, while the strong Joseph earned a living by boxing.
