The United States of Love

In the early 1990s, Poland was about to embrace a new future after the fall of the communist regime. Four women whose age spectrum spanned decades were about to experience drastic changes in their lives. A housewife trapped in a boring marriage unexpectedly falls in love with a church priest; a rigorous and capable primary school principal suffers from an unfaithful relationship; a young and beautiful dance instructor does not want to continue to wither in loneliness in a long-distance relationship; a literature teacher who is over fifty years old, dedicated his life to education but suddenly lost his job. Their problems are different, but their destinies are closely connected. This film inherits the legacy of Polish film masters such as Andrei Wajda and Guztof Kieslowski. It has a delicate and strong image style similar to "Sister Ida". Young director Tomas Wasilewski accurately masters restrained shots and cold tones, bringing the film to life. The tragedy of the lives of four women is perfectly integrated, continuing the outstanding characteristics of Made in Poland, integrating historical traces, social unrest and religious reflection, reflected in a highly dramatic personal story. It won the Silver Bear Award for Best Screenplay at the 66th Berlin Film Festival in 2016.
