This film records the epic and legendary life of India's Mahatma Gandhi. In 1893, 24-year-old Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) was invited to work as a lawyer in South Africa, determined to lead Indian immigrants to carry out non-violent non-cooperation protests there, and was imprisoned for this. After being released from prison, Gandhi returned to his motherland and established a monastic retreat in the Sanpalang area. He joined the Indian independence movement led by the Congress Party and promoted the concept of non-violent non-cooperation. Gandhi was imprisoned four times during the movement; with his unremitting efforts and the leadership of the Congress Party, Indian independence was finally put on the agenda. Gandhi also went to London in 1931 to participate in the round table conference to discuss independence. However, as independence approaches, religious conflicts between Muslims and Hindus in India have become increasingly prominent, and Gandhi's concept of non-violence and non-cooperation is facing new and more severe challenges... The film won the 1982 Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director (Richard Attenborough), Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Editing, a total of eight awards, and won three Oscars for Best Makeup, Best Film Music and Best Sound Effects.
