Lust for Life

Kanji Watanabe (played by Joe Shimura), the chief of the Municipal Citizen Section, has been a model civil servant who has been working full-time for nearly 30 years. However, he and his colleagues are busy every day but are overwhelmed and don't know what they are busy with. A group of women jointly went to the city government to apply to fill in the smelly pond near the community and build a small park on it. The receptionist at the Civil Affairs Department told them to report their problems to the Civil Engineering Department, and the Parks Department pushed them to the Construction Department... After the application was circulated, they were kicked back to the Civil Affairs Department. A month later, Watanabe went to the hospital due to physical discomfort and was diagnosed with gastric cancer. He did not have much time left. When Watanabe returned home, he felt lonely and helpless. His son (played by Nobuo Kaneko) just wanted to use the old man's pension and savings to start a new family outside. In despair, Watanabe did not go to work and drank to drown his sorrows. Later, Oda (Odagiri Mizen), a female staff member who resigned, gave Watanabe inspiration.
