Breaking the Waves

In Scotland in the 1970s, a slightly neurotic woman Beth (played by Emily Watson) married oil worker Yan (played by Stellan Skarsgård) regardless of religious constraints. The loving life did not last long. Yann was seriously injured during an oil operation and became paralyzed. Beth was very uncomfortable and even felt that her own desires had caused this tragedy. In order to awaken her husband's vitality, Beth teases different men and has relations with them, so that Arn's illness can be conquered by the power of lust. Her husband's condition improved unexpectedly. However, everyone in the village cast aside Beth, and Beth was sent to a mental hospital. The belief of sacrificing for love burns strongly in Beth's heart and will once again push her into desperation.
