Desire of the Gods

A group of people live far away from the civilized world on the South Island of Japan. The Taigenji family belongs to a family of witches who worship the gods on the island. Their grandfather, Yamamori, has both divine and inhuman characters. The relationship between Tai Genji and his sister Tai Ma is somewhat ambiguous, but Tai Ma was forcibly taken as a concubine by the island leader Long Liyuan. Kametaro is the son of Taigenji. He yearns for the civilized life in the city and is extremely disgusted with the life and customs on the island, but he cannot break the stereotypes and customs on the island. People on the island have long relied on growing sugar cane for a living, and now they need to build a sugar factory. A technician from Tokyo went to the island to investigate the water source problem of the sugar factory and suggested using the waterfall as the water source, which was strongly opposed by the island residents. A capitalist wanted to build an airport on the island and needed Taigenji's family to relocate, but Taigenji flatly refused. On the night of worshiping the gods, Tai Genji and his sister Taima saw Long Liyuan's body while rowing out to sea. A group of young people rowed two boats to catch up, and Kametaro was one of them. They beat Taigenji to death with oars, and Taima was tied to the mast... The film is adapted from the drama "The Forbidden Island". It blends sociology and folklore, and describes the Japanese nation's latent consciousness, the complex relationships between people, people's trance-like mental states, the repetitive monotonous labor, and the political influence.
