Tom Kubik (James Caviezel), husband of San Francisco strongwoman lawyer Claire Kubik (played by Ashley Judd) ) was suddenly arrested by the FBI and sent to a military court near Los Angeles for secret trial on charges of killing nine civilians in El Salvador while serving. The shocked Claire desperately left her job and came to Los Angeles, hiring local military court lawyer Charles Grimes (Morgan Freeman) to defend Tom together with the military-appointed young defense lawyer Lieutenant Embry (Adam Scott).
