Sinking

Adapted from the American J. Caine's novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice", it was completed in 1941. Under the filming conditions that the script must be reviewed by the fascist government, Visconti made this abnormal love story of adultery and murder of her husband into a work full of despair and fate. In the film, on the one hand, the heroine comes from a poor family and involuntarily marries a fat and vulgar hotel owner. She has no courage to escape the life of being supported (and humiliated from time to time). The hero is a wandering unemployed vagrant who cannot withstand the temptation of the heroine and commits fatal crimes. The difficult social living conditions clearly highlight the fateful fate of the hero and heroine who have no choice but to hit it off. Visconti, who is directing for the first time, has already shown the biggest feature of his later works in the film: the delicate depiction of the characters' inextricable erotic psychology. In the gaze of the two sexes on each other's bodies during the meal, Visconti clearly juxtaposes the difficult material life and the unfettered inner sensuality, making up for the simplicity of the adultery process.
