When Zhongliang (Leslie Cheung), whose parents both died, went to seek refuge with his sister Xiuyi (Saifei Ho) who married into the Pang family, he was squeezed and insulted by his brother-in-law. He poisoned his brother-in-law with opium in a rage. After escaping to Shanghai, he accidentally fell into the trap of a gang leader and became a "spoiler" who used his sex appeal to seduce rich wives and extort money from them.
