Welcome, Marshall

Spain. In the remote, impoverished and forgotten town of Vial del Rio, one day a government official suddenly came and announced that the Marshall Aid Mission would arrive in the town in the near future, and asked the locals to receive the American delegation with appropriate standards. The news spread and the whole town was in uproar. People of all classes, walks of life, and factions are dreaming of gold. Everyone hopes to get what they want from the Americans. However, Americans never came to the town, and people's fantasies and hopes came to nothing. Soon, the small town of Vial del Rio returned to its former poor and forgotten state. The film satirizes the social phenomena in Spain at the time and the deception of "US aid" in a spicy tone. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival (1953). Not only did Berlanga become an internationally renowned director in one fell swoop, he also opened the way for foreign countries to understand Spanish films and promote the development of the Spanish film industry.
