In the Garden of Death

In an unknown South American diamond mining area, the dictatorial army wanted to close the mine, but met with armed resistance from the workers. French miner Castin (played by Charles Vanel) falls in love with a prostitute Jin (played by Simone Signoret) in a mining town. After being accused of leading a riot, he decides to take Jin and his only daughter Maria (played by Marcia Girardon) to leave by boat at night. The town's missionary, Father Lisardi (Michel Piccoli), was misunderstood by the townspeople in order to protect Castine, and had to flee together. The explorer Chuck (Georges Machal), who blew up the army headquarters during the riot, also came to the ship that night and forced everyone to abandon the ship midway and flee to Brazil on foot through the tropical rainforest. A group of five people trekked through the mosquito-infested rainforest. They were hungry, constantly lost, some had hallucinations, and some went crazy out of despair. Can they get out of danger and escape successfully? This film is the second in a trilogy co-produced with France after Luis Bunuel returned to the European film scene after his exile.
