In 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War started, the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army was reorganized into the Eighth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army. Liu Bocheng served as the commander of the 129th Division and took the opportunity to blow up 24 Japanese aircraft, which relieved the pressure on the frontal battlefield and gained great prestige. In 1938, Deng Xiaoping took office as the political commissar of the 129th Division. He and Liu Bocheng formed the unique Liu and Deng commanding art, and established the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan anti-Japanese base area based on the Taihang Mountains in She County, Handan, Hebei Province. On the one hand, we carried out guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines, and on the other hand, we developed the economy, and organized the people of Shexian County to carry out people's war to fight drought, eliminate locusts, and produce self-rescue. We attacked the Japanese invaders and smashed the enemy's blockade of the Shexian base area. It gradually developed and grew and became the largest anti-Japanese base area under the leadership of our party.
