Turumba

Kidlat Tahimik's second film "Turumba" (Kidlat Kulog Productions, 1983) provides a virtual textbook showing the penetration of capital into a traditional village and the transformation of collective relations by market and money relations. This process is emblematic of the impact of cash ties on the religious ritual designated by the film's title and inaugurated the changes that the studio brought to the market. In this festival, what is separated as culture and religion in modern society has not yet been separated, and those beautiful tourists - the Western public of Tulumba - can still look at and reconstruct from a distance behind the intervention medium of the camera and its travelogue language. Thus, it is possible already here to enumerate the formal elements that would be deployed and developed more ambitiously in Mababangong Bangungot (1977). A secondary symbolism that marks this and collaborative choices involves acknowledging and ostentatiously highlighting the inauthenticity of Western audiences and travelogues in general.
