1960年，由方五洲（吴京 饰）、曲松林（张译 饰）等人组成的中国登山队在珠穆朗玛峰，他们克服了严寒、大风、雪崩等种种困难，终于成功登顶。然而因为摄影机意外摔毁，方五洲等人无法证明自己的成绩，从而留下莫大的遗憾。时光流转，十五年后，对当年的遗憾久久无法忘怀的曲松林再度他与方五洲重逢，加入了中国登山队，这次他们请来了气象学家徐缨（章子怡 饰），并加入李国梁（井柏然 饰）、杨光（胡歌 饰）等年轻队员，再次向珠峰发起挑战。在攀登过程中，他们不仅要面对自然的挑战，还要面对人性的考验。在珠峰的严寒中，他们结下了深厚的友谊，共同面对生死。 伟大的珠穆朗玛峰，终将见证不屈不挠的中国人取得荣光的那一刻……
