上海法租界老城区发生一起凶杀案。案发现场除了死者财叔外，还有受伤昏迷的上海华声广播电台播音员蓝妙如。蓝妙如双目失明，长期租住在财叔的房子里，与财叔常有往来。凶杀案发生后，巡捕房探长陈亨利带儿子陈天生出现场勘察。从现场勘察的结果和蓝妙如苏醒后的回忆推断，天生认为凶手应该是两个人，而蓝妙如就是“目击者”。蓝妙如是陈探长夫人的崇拜偶像。蓝妙如出院后被陈太太接到自己家，安排在儿子天生的房间。从蓝妙如就餐时的反应和黑暗处时的神情来看，天生觉得蓝妙如作为“目击者”似乎有些问题。妙如稍有好转就到电台上班，借助媒体记者的关心，蓝妙如规劝凶杀案的两名凶手投案自首。媒体的报道激起凶手江涛和豹子的气愤，也为蓝妙如招来杀身之祸。月上树梢，回到财叔公寓的蓝妙如遭到袭击，现场留下公寓底下开赌场的方文华的尸体。财叔的案情还没有进展，方文华又遭谋杀，而且现场遗留物显示凶手为同一...
