1960年，年轻技术员常汉卿刚留学回来，与从铁道兵部队转业分配到厂里来的女战斗英雄金灿烂相遇了。他们从互相看不顺眼到相知、相爱，克服了来自家庭和外界的干扰，最终结合在了一起。婚后他们一起克服来自生活的种种困难、研究技术，花费了毕生精力共同为我国电力机车的研发、建造作出努力。岁月变迁后，他们的孩子也最终选择了机车建造这一专业，并为我国建造出了世界一流的高铁。
