Guillermo del Toro · The story takes place in 1963, during the Cold War, the mute girl Elisa (played by Sally Hawkins) works in the government laboratory as a cleaning woman. When she was young, a serious illness took away Elisa's voice. From then on, she has lived a lonely life in silence. Her only friends are the old painter (Richard Jenkins) and her colleague Zelda (Octavia Spencer). One day, a high-alert alarm sounded in the laboratory, and a mysterious jar filled with water was brought in. Alyssa was shocked to find that the jar contained a strange creature that was half human and half fish. Under the leadership of Richard (Michael Shannon), a team of scientists wanted to extract substances from this monster that could produce biological weapons. However, in Alyssa's eyes, it was just a lonely life form like herself. As time passed, feelings developed between Elsa and the monster.
