In the United States in the 1950s, a young woman Therese (Rooney Mara) ) works as a salesperson in a New York department store, but she longs for a job as a photographer. One day, Carol (played by Cate Blanchett), a beautiful and elegant blond lady, came to a department store to buy Christmas gifts, and she fell in love with Therese at first sight. The film is adapted from Patricia Highsmith's lesbian novella "The Price of Salt" published anonymously in 1952. Due to the sensitive subject matter, the publisher initially refused to distribute it.
