Land and Freedom

In 1939, David, an unemployed British youth, like many socialist youths from all over the world, joined an international guerrilla organization to fight for democracy and freedom and entered the Spanish Civil War to fight against Franco's dictatorship and tyranny. David came to Barcelona because of his injuries. The sound of miserable cries in the pool of blood during the war became a lingering nightmare for him. He found himself wavering between his loyalty to socialism and his new lover. However, his dream of reform was not diminished by being away from the battlefield, and finally chose to return to his comrades on the front line... The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, the French César Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and the European Film Festival's Best Film.
