The death of Hollywood's popular superstar George (played by Ben Affleck) left his fiancée Raylor (played by Robin Tunney) and his mother Helen (played by Lois Smith) heartbroken. According to the official report, George died of suicide. However, Helen was full of doubts about this conclusion. In order to find out the truth about her son's death, Helen hired private detective Louis (Adrien Brody). As the investigation unfolds, Louis discovers that George had a romantic past with Tony (Diane Lane), the wife of MGM studio president Eddie (Bob Hoskins), which seems to be the key to George's death. As Louis gets closer to the truth, danger is also approaching him. In the dark, it seems that there are some powerful people who don't want Louis to find the answers he wants.
