I failed, but...

"I failed, but..." tells the story of Takahashi and his three best friends who were unable to graduate, but continued to roll around happily on campus as a blessing in disguise; Takahashi's other three dorm mates graduated but became unemployed, and spent their days bored at home. Ozu was a troubled student who went to the cinema and did not take the entrance exam. The film is undoubtedly a portrayal of his youth. The two groups of students, one diligent and the other lazy, have a comic language of Xia Lao'er style that makes them laugh at their belly. What is unforgettable is that it was the first time Chizu Kasa played an important role. Watching him gradually become more important in Ozu's films is another pleasure.
