The film is adapted from Akhiro Dohashi's novel "The Bakumatsu Marathon Samurai". It is set in the Edo period and tells the story of the Lord of the Anaka Domain who ordered a long-distance running race called the "Ansei Hiking" in order to resist threats from foreign countries and exercise the body and mind of the feudal lords. It was also the earliest long-distance running race in Japan. However, this activity was mistakenly regarded as a rebellion by the shogunate, so assassins were sent to Anaka Castle, where no feudal lords were stationed, in an attempt to regain the territory... It is jointly planned and produced by Jeremy Thomas ("The Last Emperor") and Toshiaki Nakazawa ("The Embalmer"), directed by Bernard Ross ("Anna Karenina"), with Philip Glass ("The Truman Show") as the soundtrack, and Emi Wada ("Ran" and "Heroes") as the costume designer.
